Wedding bands in South Africa: cost & how to choose one
Updated 15 June 2026
A live wedding band in South Africa typically costs R18,000 to R45,000, depending on the number of musicians, their reputation and how long they play. A small acoustic duo or trio for the ceremony and dinner can be R8,000–R18,000; a full function band for the reception sits around R25,000–R45,000; and a well-known showband can run R50,000 and up. Most fees include the band's own PA and basic lighting — always confirm.
These ranges reflect what vetted bands quote on Gigster's band listings. The only way to get an exact figure for your date and venue is to send a brief and request a quote.
Wedding band costs by line-up
| Line-up | Typical fee | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Solo / acoustic duo | R8,000 – R18,000 | Ceremony, drinks, dinner background |
| Trio / small band | R15,000 – R28,000 | Intimate weddings; dinner + light dancing |
| Full function band (4–6) | R25,000 – R45,000 | Reception dance floor; the main event |
| Showband / known act | R50,000+ | Large, premium weddings |
What drives a wedding band's price
1. Number of musicians
The biggest single factor — you're paying each musician. A four-to-six-piece band with vocals, guitar, bass, drums and keys costs considerably more than a duo, but fills a dance floor in a way a duo can't.
2. Reputation and demand
An established band with a portfolio of weddings and strong reviews charges more than one building its book. In peak wedding season (October–April), the best bands book out months ahead and price accordingly.
3. Set length and breaks
Most quotes cover a set number of live sets (e.g. 3 × 45 minutes) with recorded music between. Extra sets or a later finish add cost. Confirm how long they actually play, and what covers the gaps.
4. Sound, lighting and travel
Professional bands bring their own PA and basic stage lighting — confirm it's included and adequate for your guest count. Destination weddings (the Winelands, Drakensberg, a private farm) add travel and often accommodation: budget R3,000–R10,000 on top.
Wedding band vs DJ
A live band brings unmatched energy and is a centrepiece in itself; a DJ is more affordable, plays any song, and runs later. The most popular format at larger SA weddings is a band for dinner and the first dance, then a DJ for the late session. For the full breakdown, see Wedding band vs DJ in South Africa →
How to choose a wedding band
- Watch live footage — not a studio recording. A wedding or function clip shows how they read a real room.
- Check the song list — make sure their repertoire fits your taste and your guests' across the generations.
- Confirm the line-up you're paying for is the line-up that turns up — and who the vocalist is.
- Clarify PA, lighting, breaks and overtime in writing.
- Read reviews from real events. On Gigster, reviews come only from clients with a confirmed, completed booking.
