Mpho and Uvimba Band is a celebrated Afro-jazz ensemble founded in 1993 in Cape Town, South Africa. Originally performing under the name Mpho and Friends, the group evolved into a seven-piece band rooted in the vibrant townships of Gugulethu and Nyanga. The band is led by renowned jazz vocalist Mpho Motheane, whose career includes collaborations with South African legends such as Stimela, Rebecca Malope, and Women Unite. Pianist and band leader David Shuping joined Mpho to expand the group’s sound, blending traditional rhythms with Afro-fusion textures. We performed in and around Cape Town, for opening of PARLIAMENT, PRIVATE and GOVERNMENT functions for HEAD OF STATES and, in FESTIVALS, CONCERT IN THE PARK, JAZZATHON organized by JCQ Productions, the NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL (Cape Town International Festival), PORTNET FESTIVAL in Saldanha and George and Concert in Johannesburg, MARCOS AFRICAN RESTAURANT, MANENBERG CAFE, THE CRYPT AND Performed in events under the auspices of GIGSTER.
